hi, my name is chloe and, well, im new to this. ive always liked games and a friend gave me a copy of the games factory and i came across this website. what the best advice anyone can give to get me started?
Welcome to TDC! Make sure you have a look at the articles and downloads sections especially. The projects section shows what we're all up to and you can start your own stuff too. Also check out the latest klikcast episode, it shows the entries in a competition we just had.
If you ever need any help with your games or anything, we're just a post away!
thats alot to look at! would it be worth it to get multimedia fusion 2? im debating on buying it or not. i watched the klikcast thing and it was cool, i liked the random song in the middle! is there any good step by step tutorials on how to use it? i learn better that way.
If you have the money, go for it. There are a (very) few of us (myself included) who prefer TGF1's interface, but MMF2 is more powerful and stable. I'll be getting MMF2 when I can afford it. I don't have any links on me at the moment for beginner tutorials... You can download the MMF2 demo and check the choco-break tutorial if you'd like.
yeah im messing with the MMF2 demo right now, and i think it feels alot better. the choco-break tutorial was good but it really didnt go into much, and ive already seen alot nicer stuff on this website already. what is construct?
and yeah the construct subject is kinda touchy, but for gods sake please stop using the argument "scirra are a bunch of criminals".
Not only nobody gives a flying fuck about whether the original creator broke a stupid nda or not, nobody ever proved that and ashley/tigerworks already denied the story several times.
So,
Construct is free, has hardware acceleration, embedded physics engine, and is updated at a quick rate. However construct still isn't very stable.
On the other hand, MMF2 is stable, has a huge community supporting it, has several extensions and you can do java apps with it (still doesn't support every extension but well it's a start). However it's not free, still doesn't have proper hardware acceleration, and is updated really, really slowly.
there doesn't need to be an argument. he was just letting me know that he perfers it, which is alright in my book. other ppl can choose to comment on his choice but they dont have to. dont hurt me!
Now Adam dear boy, Show your manners to new members.
Yeah, tbh I don't know why Clickers fight with Structers but there's really no need. Click came first, but hey- If Construct suits you better, no need to argue.
Perhaps if you spent an hour or two of the three months you've been on TDC learning how to improve your games, you'd be just as good at making them as you are at spamming, ωξяξW○○F.
As for what product to use, all biases a side, more people here will be able to help you with Clickteam products, and there are probably a lot more resources on creating games using CT products, too. Which helps if you're new to the scene

thats fine, i plan on getting to know the frequenters here alot better, and im sure when i start getting a project page put together itll be easier to get advice! but i suppose i couldve introduced myself better
like i said, im chloe, im from oregon and im into gaming, metal, chainmail and artness. im currently listening to alot of my older in flames albums (goodgood) and i really have a thing for old school megadeth. my favorite games would have to be will wrights stuff, like sim city and the like (id really like to give spore a try, but my comp is poop) i also like games like clocktower or silent hill (except at night). im also problably the one asian ever that isnt into japanamation.

yeah i figured because of the reaction alot of people have to construct, and i really wouldnt feel comfortable anyways working on a big project on something that isnt finalized yet, itd really suck to have to restart the project if they made a major change
Yeah, that's just Adam. His words really don't move me though. However, he made a point. This site does have a large community to help you out with whatever you need help with.
Hey! Welcome to TDC! It's great to have another clicker around!
The articles are great sources for info, and there's usually an article for
any problem or question you have. They've helped me bunches of times.
Hey, welcome to TDC! Just ask around if you need any help. If you don't want to start a thread, there's always the Chat, people are sometimes there.
Upgrading from TGF to MMF2 is usually worth the effort. If you're still starting off, and not sure if this hobby is worth your money, Construct is an excellent product, and free. There's also a tutorial on the Scirra site, which teaches you some tricks that are useful in a Clickteam product. You can always buy MMF2 later if you like it.
Also, don't mind some of the members; there's a bit of a war going on TDC between Construct and MMF, and almost everyone is on MMF's side here, just so you know.
Anyway, have fun!

This construct vs. mmf2 war only happens for the same reason there is the so called "console wars".
If you say the ps3 is the best console, chances are you have one and you want it to have more games available than the other consoles. That only happens if the console has the most sales, and the only thing you can do to achieve that is to try to persuade others to buy a ps3 too. Hence why you'll hardly find a ps3 owner saying the console sucks.
Now, we all know Construct is a serious threat to Clickteam. Clickteam isn't a millionaire corporation like EA so they are not financialy safe. What happens if Clickteam closes it's doors ? MMF2 will stop being supported and updated by clickteam, so no further software,HWA or java updates, and everyone who spent their hard earned money on buying MMF2 will not be pleased. So if Construct is a threat, it must be shot down.
Hence why like Muz said, almost everyone here is on MMF's side.
Im not on either side, both have their good and bad points, and since I can have both there's no reason for me to complain. Too bad not everyone here thinks like me.

How absolutely needless.
Also posting on the forums frequently does not equal spam.

I could see both ways. If you aren't ambitious, you'll never get anywhere. If you are ambitious, you can assume giant impossible projects and be disappointed or discouraged. There's gotta be balance.
Start out simple, and gradually build in complexity as you get more capable. THEN, revert back to simplicity, because it makes games so much better (in my opinion) The experience you get from building more complex things will make your simpler things 100x cooler. The result is a solid game that didn't have you tearing your hair out in the process of making it.
And for heaven's sake, organise your code with comments and groups, label your alterable values, and write down a key for all the object flags you use. Otherwise, you will waste time that you could be using for learning things.
Oh, and back up your games by saving extra copies, saving them to a flash drive, another computer... floppy disk... whatever works
How I learnt to make games, was to make what ever I felt like making no matter how big or small the project idea was. I think you can learn something from almost any type of game project, it doesn't really matter if you don't finish any of your first few hundred games, they're all good learning/fun!
well i used to hang out with a guy that did conventional programming, and he tutored me abit. i dont know very much about actual scripting in like c# or whatever, but i do know format and stuff or whatever its called, so i guess that helps...
You seem to be too good, too fast to be a newbie. I suspect that you're one of those veterans from back then who have been lurking quietly around TDC for a while and suddenly register lately
I just wanted to write that so that I could post a link to this and say "I knew it" 2 years from now

haha thanks! but im not that good, ive just had alot of time to work on it and most of the stuff ive learned is from the articles section and tutorials. about the only thing ive really been able to get a good grasp on are flags and values (i made a few levels in starcraft a long time ago, and they used triggers which were kind of similar to flags) and the platform movement objects. the rest is just a bunch of copied thrown together code that doesnt work very well... well to me at least. im sorry, im just really excited about this!

I think half of us at least are thinking the same thing.
I have the same feeling as Muz. Regardless, welcome to the TDC. I've been around for a while but I'm too lazy to actually finish something. I'm not that good either. Anyway, whenever I've needed help learning something the community has helped me. So just ask questions and you shall receive

Actually, I was thinking about writing just that. But calling people a fake account is kinda rude. Heh, come to think of it, one of the coolest guys I've met recently turned out to be a girl. I know that miss chloecake is not a real cake, no more than OldManClayton is an old man IRL, but I like the chloecake all the same

as for you wolf, youll get something eventually(i think) i know i sure will. and youre right, the ppl here have been very helpful and sweet!
Thanks, I know I can do it if I put enough time to it but like I said, I'm lazy. I have other more pressing projects such as getting my novel published. Best of luck with your game.
definitely. its a very long process especially for first time authors. i have an english professor who got rejected 40 times before finally getting an agent. his book still isn't published yet.
i have to commend you, im not good at convincing people to buy my crap. id prolly end up doing like jay sherman, and put a cardboard cutout of my self that obnoxiously says "by my book, BUY MY BOOOKAH."
Lol, there's a new girl at my uni by the name of Chloe L., around 18 years old. Types exactly like you too. It would be sooo weird if it was you

Lol, then there might be two chloes at TDC, and one of them will have the same IP as me (because of logging on from the same place). But I don't think I'll do that

Haha I saw a guy that looked almost exactly like OMC at a silent auction. It was so convincing because we saw an accordian just laying around on top of a stage! Turned out his name was Jesse, which is another hilarious thing. One of my Cousin's name is Jesse, and his brother is named Clayton!
Naw, not stalking. I was just there and I happened to see him. I only found out his name because he gave a speech. Turned out he sounded more serious than OMC and he wasn't the one that played the Accordian. (Some local bands played there so instead, some lady played the accordian in a celtic band. Sounded really nice tho. )
