I can't actually judge development times. Sam; supposed to be finished in 2 weeks. Tormi; supposed to be finished in a month. Lunnye; supposed to be finished in 24 hours.
I could probably come up with many. But I'm with Adam in that I start too many projects off of random whimsical ideas. I've gotten better about that now, since I became an admin. My gamedev-related time is sucked up by the site.

I can't draw well, I usually stop developing a game due to watching red squares jumping around too long.

Project: Roller Coaster was originally a game where you had to guide a roller coaster from the top of the screen to the bottom. I confess that i always start a simple game, constantly add new features every week and never actually finish anything. I just keep making them bigger
Adam and OMC's sins are mine too, *sigh*... It appears I can't make any game because I lose focus far too easily. BUT... So far I've not lost focus on Space Star!

I can't code. Or actually I can a bit but I hate it so much I always make stuff that is too simple. Another confession is that I hate using engines made by someone else.
I always have grand video game ideas. Like, a multiplayer brawler that allows players to join in online and the difficulty and number of enemies is balanced on how many players there are.
I think big. It's too bad I don't know where to start because I don't know a lick about programming.
It's a shame, too. Because I REALLY want to make games.
I hate MMF2's events editor, and the fact that even though it's not directx based (well it wasn't until the releases of the first HWA builds) MMF2 is Windows only. I also hate the fact that, MMF2 being a updated version of KnP, it hasn't evolved much in 14 years of existence. MMF2 is now way behind the times and personally I think the only reason for someone to buy it is to avoid learning a programming language or to avoid waiting until construct gets fully stable, which, imo, doesn't make much sense.
Simple, no 3D support, it's not cross platform and it's still software accelerated (the HWA builds are still wip and unstable). Java support for mobiles was a nice addition but close to useless because the games are too slow and/or simply don't run on most phones. Also a built in physics engine would be nice too.
I actually wonder how many people here would start making 3d games if MMF2 had 3d support (it has when using extensions btw). 3d is much harder in every way.
Actually not really, it only adds a extra dimension, meshes and textures. And the OpenGL extension, from what I've seen, is close to useless.
oh and btw, mmf2 did evolve a lot, but as an example I know a programmer who created a whole 3D engine by himself in 3 months. The engine is stable and is on par with most modern engines. When I look at MMF2, I see that a whole team worked on that for 14 years and the first HWA build were only released recently when it should've been there by the release of TGF.
3D is moot, HWA is perfectly stable and working for me, and cross platform is hard to do with a snap of a finger with a large program. I'm sure MMF3 will be cross-platform from the start, since MMF2 is already being ported.
A physics engine would be quite nice.
In 1996, I don't think many people were concerned with HWA, nor were the projects created with it complicated enough to need it. Now, with our fancy effects, it's become evident that HWA is necessary.
A programmer can make plenty of engines in short amounts of time. MMF2 is a tool that takes a lot more since it's got to cater to the making of the game as well as the running of the game. And really, MMF2 hasn't taken 14 years to make. The foundation of the interface is what is 14 years old. (And you can't argue the interface idea showing its age, since it isn't. ) What else do you expect them to do to make MMF2 better?
I do not intend to turn this into a war though, so I'm dropping the subject.
Also, Originally I tried to make everything 3-D. I succeeded in this in MMF2!!! It is completely possible, but ridiculously stupid and can really show how bad you are at art... And then I got bored and thought of a great idea.

Ahaha no actually we're having a pacific discussion which is nice and rather hard to find in this community.
On the subject:
About HWA, I base my opinion mostly on my short experience with it and other people's reports, and from what I gathered, HWA isn't 100% stable enough yet and many people reported weird bugs and graphical errors.
Personally I think turning a software rendered engine into a hardware accelerated one is actually harder than porting the software to other OSes, and I'm not even talking about DS or PSP developing here.
I believe by 1996 video cards were a common component on most PCs so if TGF had HWA by that time it wouldn't make it ahead of it's time. Of course, HWA would be useless if you'd be stuck with 256 object limitation but that's not really my point.
"A programmer can make plenty of engines in short amounts of time. MMF2 is a tool that takes a lot more since it's got to cater to the making of the game as well as the running of the game."
Actually what you said also applies to the development of a game engine, so in theory developing MMF2 is like developing any other engine.
"And really, MMF2 hasn't taken 14 years to make. The foundation of the interface is what is 14 years old. (And you can't argue the interface idea showing its age, since it isn't. )"
Actually it did, MMF2 is actually KnP 4.0 while MMF1 was KnP 1.0. They changed the interface and the name, but basically everything else is the same, but improved in some aspects.
"What else do you expect them to do to make MMF2 better? "
3D support (while keeping 2D support), cross platform development, fully stable HWA, decent object selection etc... I could go on all night, those features were the only ones I thought about at first.

I've never eaten a taco either, infact the only mexican food I've had was some kind of wrap once that wasn't very nice. I zpoze thats a kind of confession.
And something else.
Oh and the last time I went to the US, I tried one of those menus at a Taco Bell restaurant. The whole thing looked nice and stuff but as soon as I had a bite, I almost threw up. No more tacos for me, thanks.
Taco Bell really isn't real Mexican food. I myself fancy their nachos and Crunchwraps, but the true taco is a homemade taco!
Confession time... I haven't had a taco in a long time. We had them so much I kind of got sick of them. Only Mexican food I've had for a long while is Nachos 'n' Cheese. And if you get it from Moe's... Oh man. -___- It's like... you died. And went to food heaven.
BTW, thanks for the compliment Johnny, the respect's mutual!
Mmmmm the crunchwrap supreme originally known as the Origami Tostada . 12 inch flour tortilla, ground beef, nacho cheese sauce, hard taco disc thing, lettuce, sour cream and diced tomatoes. Then fold it, grill it for 27 seconds.
3.50 in
Edit: Original real Mexican food is probably one of my favourite kinds of food. Originally I dismissed it and assumed it was all going to be spicy, but how wrong was I

I'm not really american, I have american ancestry. I live in Portugal, if I was compare the food from here and the garbage I have to eat every time I go the us, it would be like comparing a nice and hot lasagna with a sock from the dumpster. Even the McDonalds here is much better, in the US I can barely finish eating one of those small hamburgers while here I always ask for two big macs.
Lol The only thing I'm not too keen on is the American beverages, sodas/fizzy drinks particularly. A lot of the food is kinda crappy, but Id perhaps find food in other countries that I don't like. A lot of the American fruit is also very tasteless and pumped full of water, seemingly. Hershey's chocolate is really bad, too
But hey, I like the places and a lot of the people.

*hides*
I don't like carbonated beverages myself.
Where exactly did you go in America? We have food from all over the world in the US. In Louisiana at least all you have to do is drive an hour north or south to get totally different tasting food. Then again they do call where I'm from the melting pot of the world because of the many different cultures that are present.
Btw I have a lot of Europeans that are going to my college on sports scholarships, and I asked them what they thought of the US and they said it was nothing of what they thought it would be and that the people were "nice."
There's definitely crappy food in America, but there's also good and great food and I don't think that's any different from any other country. Though we may have more of it because we mass-produce crap to put in the aisles of Wal-mart.
Mainly Eastern USA North Carolina, Florida, NY, Washington DC, Virginia (nice food here though) Philidelphia and Atlanta once. I intend to visit Western in the near future, I couldn't care less about the middle part ROFLCHOPS.
"Btw I have a lot of Europeans that are going to my college on sports scholarships, and I asked them what they thought of the US and they said it was nothing of what they thought it would be and that the people were "nice."

I was watching a program the other month, and part of it was discussing how the majority of USA had only just started importing cheeses and other dairy foods from around the world.
Uh oh. I just realised how far this thread has gone off topic. Mr Nim will be furious \/
Er... another confession...
I doubt myself too much. Always told by people that I "sell myself short" and that I should be more positive about my own work. I guess that's why so much gets abandoned

all i can say is if you ate taco bell and dont like tacos or mexican food because of it, youre an idiot. taco bell is not tacos. fast food mexican food is not real mexican food.
go find a hole in the wall mexican food place, go to a mission in california, or just find a mexican and have them make it for you. i guarentee it will be 1000x better than the shite from a food chain.
if you think tacos are overated then youve never had a REAL taco.
Ok, nice we're back on topic now, I'm changing the rules:
Most people are just saying "I don't finish stuff", so from now post a screenshot of a completed game and tell us something interesting about it. Doesn't have to be a "confession" as such, but something that we wouldn't otherwise know.
Every game I make has some reference to Turrican 2's first level. In Sam it was this level which is like a condensed version with the exit section removed.
Disclaimer: Any sarcasm in my posts will not be mentioned as that would ruin the purpose. It is assumed that the reader is intelligent enough to tell the difference between what is sarcasm and what is not.
I never really lose interest in any of my ideas, since I love them all and would make them all if I could. It's just that I come up with so many I'm forced to pick one to work on, and I jump around sometimes. Or I did, anyway. I've been pretty good about sticking with one project lately.
I've been using Clickteam for a long time too and I've only created a lot of buggy games. None are good enough for TDC I believe. Hey!!! I think I'll just submit them all just to see if they'll be accepted.

Then what as notepad to do with my program ? also I don't who told you people used notepad as a ide, with so many free ides for some many diferent languages it's doesnt make much sense to use it as a ide for anything other than html.

Simple, omc didn't attack me or anything I did or said with pointless arguments, instead we simply had a healthy discussion where each one of us presented and explain our points of view.
Also I didn't win anything, but on the other hand you lost credibility and my respect (and probably other people's respect too).
now on topic:
My first ever completed game.
For some reason a german magazine asked for my permission to publish it in their cover dvd. It was nice but I'm still wondering why the hell they would want that garbage in their magazine.
The game can be found in almost every major freeware software site, but I never bothered to download it again and the source was lost a long time ago.
haha mine have always used this as well (I was a heavy TGF>MMF user). Now my most recent one uses them for push fixes and for left/right movement so I don't have to include tons of code since it has multiple speed levels with accel/decel.
My confessions:
I am extremely uptight about my code, even if it is common knowledge. 99.9% of what I use was self taught. No tutorials etc. I used to look at tutorials when I was new to click products, but none were ever commented and I didn't understand them at all so I just piddled around until I came up with my own shit.
It took me a year or so and probably 50++++++ custom platform engines, many using different methods, in order to complete my first bugless one. I couldn't recreate it after that, but eventually perfected it some months later using a different approach.
I've never released a finished game. In 2002 (holy shit I was 12 o_o) I completed a game with a bud of mine for the xmas competition. He disappeared about 80-85% through the process so I had to finish it myself. Finished it and my hd played out. He appeared some months later and had formatted his computer. To this day I still stand behind my statement that it blew all the other competition games out of the water. The #1 game was so buggy it was unplayable. Mine had a bugless custom engine, a cheesy story, custom AI, and an awesome boss. We plan a remake of this game someday.
I HATE extensions. I feel that if I use an extension, I am taking someone elses code (which technically I would be). I will use extensions if I need to (alpha channel maybe?, OINC definitely), but it is very, very rare and hard to talk me into doing. I know some things are impossible without them.
I have disliked TDC since I was 11 or something. I have always believed it is too cluttered and most games are way below average. It also seems to me that any game with good graphics automatically gets a 10/10 for gameplay, as long as the gameplay is only slightly below average or higher.
I have remade a game called "Orbster" with a friend at least 3 times in the past 8 years, Improving each time. We each have different opinions as to how the game should turn out so we have kind of steered clear of it for now. I feel kind of bad since it is originally his idea, but we are good buds so no hard feelings =]. Hopefully one day it will see the light of day
I was so lazy with gridquest I didn't even make a level editor
Instead I simply had a button that pasted a tile into the .ini file, in the game itself!
I literally created the entire game inside the game itself while it ran
I also feel somewhat against cluttering a game with extensions.. I think it's more important to be able to create a good game without all the extra extension jazz, and there's still so much you can do before you need the extensions unless you have a very niche idea which requires some crazy extension. Though applications are obviously excluded as to make a decent functional application to compete with what is already available you will need those extensions to do things MMF was not made to do. Or at least included in it's releases.

bad news dude, whatever you do in mmf2 implies using someone else's code. The default actions and conditions (storyboard controls, mouse pointer and keyboard, sound etc...) are nothing more than built in extensions.

Man, you're smart.
Thats like telling someone "You didn't create >Insert well known programming language here< so you are using someone elses code".
I'll keep this in mind the next time I start a game. I'll go mine some shit, build a computer from it, create my own programming languages, then create my own game development software so I can finally start making my own games like I do in mmf2 now.
"bad news dude, whatever you do in mmf2 implies using someone else's code. The default actions and conditions (storyboard controls, mouse pointer and keyboard, sound etc...) are nothing more than built in extensions."
I fail to see how that matters? It's not like it's obvious, or that's all people think about when playing the games anyway
Wiiman: I'm interested in this project. Paper Mario was by no means a bad game!
GamesterXIII: That is not what Johnny was saying. He's saying there's no difference between extensions you install and extensions that are built in, except that some may not be necessary. You can't compare a coding language with someone's code in that coding language. Cool it a bit, will you?
Whoever was talking about extensions : I've never really understood why it's so important for games to be barebones in the extensions department. I say if an extension makes something easier, cooler, or work better, just use the darn thing!

It surely doesn't matter to me, but aparently it does matter to GamesterXIII.

Which is exactly what I was replying to. I am aware that built in extensions, as well as everything else in mmf2, are made by different people. Thats pretty damn obvious. I just feel that using random extensions is like using someone else to code a part of whatever it is i am making.
I'm not necessarily against people using extensions. I'm mainly against using them myself when I don't need them. The only slight problem I have with some extensions is the fact that new members tend to use things like the PMO and have absolutely zero knowledge about platform movements. You don't learn much by using extensions like that from the start. I also stated that one of the big reasons I don't use extensions is by habit due to the fact that I was a heavy TGF 1 user and extensions made games unstable.
If someone says something stupid I'm going to reply. Why would you deliberately target a specific part of something I said instead of accepting it at face value?(argh that may be an awkward way to say it) Its as if he was intentionally trying to be "funny" or piss me off.
He did not say anything stupid. There was an inconsistency in what you said and it was merely pointed out. (And you've clarified it now) Nobody's attacking you, nobody's being mean. And if he or anyone did say something stupid, there is no need to erupt with equally stupid and sarcastic remarks with unnecessary profanity.
Capisce?
I was under the impression everyone was bantering, and we weren't being all too serious.
i'm not being too serious. I don't care so much =p. I'll stand by my opinion that his comment was stupid in my book, though. I just extended his logic down the chain =].
ahahah yeah right look at your first post and your last, looks like someone noticed the shit he stepped in and tried to clean it up so that nobody notices.
just drop it, what I said wasn't that obvious, it's easy to think the built in extensions are actually part of the program just like the properties editor is, for example and not actual extensions. And looks you didn't know that and got pissed because you thought I was making fun of you for not knowing that, which I wasn't.
I just quite simply tried to teach you something that might or might not be obvious, but since you're new in the community, I couldn't tell if you were a experienced user or a noob.

It's not that it's a bad game, I love Paper Mario, not as much as the other Mario RPGs though. It's just I thought I was finally done with Ripped Sprites...
Oh yeah, plus it's not just Paper Mario, it's also Luigi's Mansion. It's Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion rolled up into one. I tend to have a habit of Mix stuff, like with Motherworld. I'll just have to wait and see how the salad turns out....
Oh Yeah, another confession. I'm breaking NGC2's rules by using ripped sprites...
because trolling is serious business, right? Especially when there is a valid reason behind it.

Stop trying to get the last word in on each other and cluttering this thread with unnecessary off-topic posts.
My confession: I hate creating engines with the default diamond active object sprites running around everywhere, I can't stand seeing them on the screen, so I usually do at least some spriting before I even start a project. The problem is that even though I feel I am decent with spriting it's usually what makes me stop working on a project sooner because I get the shits with my sprites quickly.
Not only do I start projects and lose interest, I flit between loads of different aspects of game design/programming. For example at the moment I'm learning C++ from a book, working on a couple of mmf2 projects and recently felt compelled to make a Duke Nukem 3D TC... On top of working ungodly hours of the day and night.

may I ask what book ?
I have Beggining C++ Game Programming by Michael Dawson and it's very good, it explains everything very well and on detail, plus it comes with several examples in a cd.
I recommend it
In my first game, not only did I use the default movement, but I used invisible actives for everything (In the stretched out version of the default shape ) because I didn't know how to make a backdrop an obstacle. Same game as above. I was such an idiot.

I've only made a few games and noone liked them.
.... never made a boss in a game.
.... never built a level editor
.... never plan out anything
.... never use extensions (maybe after purchase MMF2)
.... never completed a professional-looking game
My artwork is not up to par
.. coding is improving but still not efficient at all to what it should be and still a mess in many ways
.. brain is probably broken, I think I'm retarded
I am extremely slow at doing anything, as if the time cycle of my life revolves slower than others
. .. inefficient in all aspects of my life and my sloppy coding is the most efficient thing about me
Blood of the Ancient One, Seen only as Shadow, Faster than Lightning, Fierce as the Greatest Dragon, Nearly Invisible, Floating in a Dream, Entered through the Demon Door, Destroyer of Evil in a Realm with a Red Sky Scarred, Who could I be ?

In my 9 years of using Clickteam products I haven't actually finished anything that I felt very good about. Also, I've never released a game with sounds. But that will change soon, I hope.

I confess I have just been reading through this thread twice again. There are bits of TDC-style (generic internet-slang combined with stuff like "ahahahaha") arguments, like lost little fragments. It is really hard to piece them together and seem totally unrelated to each other and to the topic of the thread. All that while I just got glasses and am supposed to see everything clearly now. What am I missing?

Let's call that a misunderstanding, then. After seeing you call someone a troll who can't read English, and arguing with 3 people across 8 pages of a thread, I hope you can see why I didn't think you were being ironic about enjoying getting threads locked. smiley face

Adam is a proper artist, so you can count on his games being cute and well designed every time. I'm just a guy who made a falafel game once, so you can't really count on me delivering the same style in my next game.
Confession: There was actually a proper sequel 90% finished, but I scrapped it because it was too different and way too hard.

Lol, I have played Falafel many times, and watched the walk through on youtube a few times, too. I think if you made a sequel or even a bigger game it would be very popular

I relentlessly keep backups of everything, so yea I've got loads of mine from 96-97 with my first games, first websites and even first midis. Actually I even used one of these early mods as the theme for Lunnye . There's something creative that boils from lack of tools and such, I made that song in Modtracker but converted it to midi and into Logic and it sounded brilliant compared to the original.
Old stuff= win. Sometimes.
And I really don't care. I have a lot of fun making them, but then I get bored and lazy and do things half-assed. Oh well. I laugh a lot in the process.
