Game of the Week Winner

"Special Agent" is a platform game that I've been working on for the last few months with J Freude (whose name here is usually some variation of "deadguy.jf" ). It was based on Apogee Software's "Secret Agent" from 1991. This game continues the platform/puzzle elements of the original, adding more varied missions and a set of online high scores so that you can compete with other players.

Special Agent Robert has been sent to Mullet Island, somewhere in an undisclosed remote location, where the Society for the Development of Diabolical Schemes (SDDS) are setting up a base. Sabotaging their buildings will stop their efforts to introduce AOL-speak to the Oxford English Dictionary, manufacture Prawn Cocktail crisps, or give Jeremy Beadle another TV programme, among other world-threatening plans.

There are fourteen standard levels and two secret ones, each with a variety of game modes. The first one you'll encounter, Graded Mode, scores you on how efficiently you complete each mission, with the number of enemies destroyed, items collected, and so on. There is also a Time Attack mode where you're scored on the amount of time it takes to complete a mission.

All the game details are explained in the tutorial level. The default controls are the usual arrow keys to move, with S to jump, A and D to fire left/right, and TAB to cancel/bring up your objectives. If the two-button firing mode doesn't appeal to you, you can change it back to normal in the Options menu from the title screen.

The high score tables and other information about the game are located at http://wired.st-and.ac.uk/~wong/agent/ . Now, go and save the world...

OH SNAP

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 9th December, 2006

Sorry Chaoz, I wanted to release it and get it over with, so I downsampled them myself and credited you for the suggestion If you send them over, though, I'll see if I can include yours in any updates.

Cool, downloading...

Posted by DaVince 9th December, 2006

Whoa, it really DOES look like Secret Agent. Downloading!

Posted by axel 9th December, 2006

Oooh, downloading...

Posted by Johnny Look 9th December, 2006

No, it looks better.

Posted by Hempuli 9th December, 2006

This is so KEENISH! And it's funny that you have included some signs with vortikon language from keen!

There are some bugs, though...
When i watch the up-left corner of the whole level, theres coming an unstoppable flow of sparks. Maybe there's something with the events?

And also, in security point-level, theres a window which is only 32 x 32 pixels wide, and the agent can't get in from it. Maybe the detector is too big?

I remember the demo of this. Great game going to be close for next week's GOTW between this and Reactor 7.

Posted by Hempuli 9th December, 2006

In fact that's o9

How bout tyou shut up and leave me alone.

Posted by Kazuma 10th December, 2006

Dam, yoo kant tipe

Posted by axel 10th December, 2006

Hmmm, it's quite well made, but it's a bit too chaotic. Messy.

Posted by CsaR 10th December, 2006

Really nice game, but then again I like the original aswell. It seems to stay pretty true to the original except that you have more ammo which is good, that always seemed to be a problem in the original.

So Thumbs up for a good remake. I'm not a total fan of remakes though since they are kind of ripoffs of the originals.

Finished it - including the fenced off level

I found it a lot easier than Davids previous games, which is a good thing, as its more accessable. I love it.

Well done for getting this finished, David. As you know I was a very big fan of the demo you released before. Glad to see the old highscores continue

Now why the fuggly hell is this not on the front page?

Posted by DaVince 10th December, 2006

"This is so KEENISH!"
You never played Apogee's Secret agent, I notice.

Posted by DaVince 10th December, 2006

"Great game going to be close for next week's GOTW between this and Reactor 7. "
Reactor 09 is in this week's GOTW, lol.

NOT Phizzy - It is on the front page, scroll down

Posted by Iv4n 10th December, 2006

Woah! Can't wait to download this!

Posted by sean cameron 10th December, 2006

This game is cool. Does anyone else experience a bit of a lag when the screen scrolls? Maybe it's my computer's fault. Either way, it was a bit distracting .
I liked how the enviroment felt a bit destructable. I think attention to little details like that give games a more immersive feel.
I never played Secret Agent, but I bet this game is a worthy tribute!
Also, I'd like to compliment whoever did the music for this!
Thumbs up

GOTW for me

Posted by Willy C 11th December, 2006

really cool game. got some keen elements. thumb up!

Posted by Antonio Barra 11th December, 2006

Very cool. It looks good and plays very well. The only nitpick I have is that it is at times difficult to distinguish between pure background objects and "interactive" ones.

Posted by Retired Kliker Lazarus 11th December, 2006

Didn't see that, Sheepie.

Posted by Superfunk 11th December, 2006

Good to see this done! Downloading it right now!

Posted by danjo 12th December, 2006

why do the characters have NO BRIGHTNESS unlike the rest of the game?

Posted by JFrudy 12th December, 2006

@ danjo
-the updated character sprites were never added into the game, along with some other alternative sprites. The first thing you will notice next time around is the brightness of the main character. That was my mistake, i never did send David those sprites. whoops =P.

Posted by Spiriax 13th December, 2006

I finished this game yesterday. Thanks for the game David, it was sweet!

Posted by Hayo 13th December, 2006

This is cool, I might write a review if i can find some spare time.

Posted by Willy C 13th December, 2006

I've finished the game now. Whats the deal with the flag color code?

Posted by X_Sheep 13th December, 2006

If you enter the right code you get to a secret level. The code is hidden in one of the other levels.

Posted by Spiriax 14th December, 2006

Oh, I just wanna say that the music from this game rocks!!! I love the tracks "Spam", "Electro" and "Shadow"!! It's melody-orgasmic!

Yeah, experienced some lagging myself too. I don't think it was even noticeable everywhere but it did cause some distraction even though I don't think I was running any other programs at the same time. Maybe it's somehow related to the number of objects in some particular levels?

I think DavidN has composed music for the game himself - at least most of the tracks?

Otherwise I'd better not comment on the game any further. As I've stated elsewhere I've been kind of a fanboy of Special Agent since I first played the three level demo

Posted by alex37 14th December, 2006

broken link?

Posted by X_Sheep 14th December, 2006

No.

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 14th December, 2006

Fanboys are always welcome Yes, I did write the music myself, though a couple of files contain conversions of songs from other places ("Stein" and "Machine", to be specific). Good to know that people like them!

My server, Wired, has been experiencing some problems over the last couple of days, which is why you might see a broken link or not be able to access the high scores now and then - I first noticed the problem last night, but I hope it's mostly over now.

Thanks for all the other comments.

Wow DVS Security Centre is just like the original Secret Agent level...

but without the shark in the water

Posted by X_Sheep 15th December, 2006

Not like the shark made much difference, as the water killed you instantly anyway

Posted by DaVince 15th December, 2006

GREAT game!

Posted by DaVince 15th December, 2006

Oh yeah, and eat your veggies!

Posted by NeoMonkey 16th December, 2006

I remember when i played this game (apogee) and it was so great i played it about 10 in row in one day it was so fun. And this one is good too!

Posted by The Chris Street 16th December, 2006

Saying that, it's rather a tragedy if a secret agent has the ability to blast enemies to hell and the intelligence to complete missions, and save the universe, and yet hasn't mastered doggy paddle

Posted by X_Sheep 16th December, 2006

Eh, so many people in DOS games already get killed when they stand in the water up to their knees

Posted by JFrudy 16th December, 2006

maybe their legs are made of salt

Posted by RenatoDep 16th December, 2006

I can't shoot towards the left? It only shoots to the right...even if i turn the character, it refuses to shoot if it's facing left.

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 16th December, 2006

Turn on "One button firing" in the Options, or on the map screen.

Think of it this way, in every RPG games you can blast the demonlord of Mars to dust while you can't even open a wooden chest that is locked.

Posted by JFrudy 17th December, 2006

i dont get it

Posted by The Chris Street 20th December, 2006

A = shoot left
D = shoot right

I LOVED secret agent, so I'm definately downloading this. Looks great! I always hoped someone would make a Secret Agent knock-off.

Posted by Plooscva 23rd December, 2006

Ehh how you get into the secret level?

Posted by Radix 23rd December, 2006

The fenced-in one? There are a few levels that have a four-colour pattern hidden in pretty obvious places. These correspond with the four flags at the top of the overworld.

Posted by TheoX 24th December, 2006

Oooh, so that's how you get in there. Is there any bonus for getting all A's on the levels? I haven't done it yet...

Anyway, this game is AWESOME! The gameplay is great, the graphics are perfect, the music is fantastic, and I love the variety of enemies. It has all the stuff I liked in Secret Agent, except better!

Also, I noticed that one level (the outside one) was specifically modeled after an orininal Secret Agent level.

Great job DavidN!!

Neat! I got to the secret level, and it reminded me of something...
I'm not going to give anything away.

Hmm... I'm very confused. I just got an "S" grade on a level. Maybe it was because I got all the bonuses.

S = Super

HEY!!! I KNOW ALL ABOUT THIS!!! you used the fastloop movement tutorial to make the platform movement and then you modified the little spaceman sprite of the fastloop movement to make it look cool, nice use of da tut, I'm not trying to say you are a stealer, I am just telling the truth

Posted by David Newton (DavidN) 31st August, 2010

Well, I would think I would be authorized to 'steal' from the tutorial, considering I wrote it

Well recognized - but it actually happened the other way around, I changed this game's main character sprite into a spaceman for the level in the platform tutorial. (He was actually going to be in another game of mine, but it never got off the ground.)

I would like to know if there is any other secret level besides the level that is surrounded, because I already played that level and nothing happened after I finished it. What happens if I get an A in every level?
