Bernard & Hank version 1.01
--------------------------

Changes in this version:
- slower acceleration
- weaker gravity
- boss bug fixed

The first and probably last game by the Peasants:

Matt Esch (levels, music)
Johan Jansen (levels, coding)
Matt Olver (music)
Sander van Reek (levels, coding)
Ryan Wilfong (levels)
Tom Filhol (levels)
Hayo van Reek (gfx, sound, music, levels, coding)

Bernard & Hank is about the farmer Bernard Buffalo and his retired friend Hank Hoedown.
The evil businessman NationalLiberal wants his farmland, to build a factory farm on it.
He sends out his minions to steal the deeds to the farm. Bernard and Hank will have to
get this back, and they have to get rid of all the liberalminions. They will have to go
through 40 normal platform levels, 3 driving levels and meet 15 different enemies to do so.
The game is a bone-headed platformer with moving platforms, collecting coins,
jumping on fat people and getting shot by cowliberals. The game also contains some minigames,
to be unlocked by finishing levels.
I used a 52 colour palette for the gfx, because I felt like doing something different,
I have been using quite enough colours in my candy-ish Fishhead games.

Although this game took 15 months to create (we started in december 2003), only about
6 months were really spent on working on the game. We orinally started working on this
with 3 people: Matt Esch, Johan and me. More team members were added along the road, but
it all started falling apart pretty soon due to some non-click related problems.
Still, it was nice to work with these great people, and the game wouldn't be there without them.

If you download this game and expect this to one of the best click games ever, it will
leave you pretty disappointed. The game is so simple it is hardly there. The gfx are
simple, the sounds are simple, the music is simple, the gameplay is simple and paralaxing is nothing new.
If you expect a decent and fun game to kill some time, this will actually
make you happy. The game is pretty big, no standard movements were used, and all gfx, sound effects
and music are original.

The zip file also contains a configuration app (window size, backgrounds) and an instruction manual.

Please report bugs here, I will try to fix them all.

AWSOME game, cool graphics, i saw the video to this a while back and was impressed! One thing though... when the character dies, are the coins meant to come back?

Posted by Cazra 15th March, 2005

very nice! kind of jerky though.

Posted by Smeggy 15th March, 2005

Simply awesome.

Posted by 15th March, 2005

At last, it has came out. I'll download when I get home. Also please post this at 3DWave too.

Posted by CYS 15th March, 2005

Very nice graphics. I respect his idea of making the game simple but it's a little too simple to my taste.

Posted by Radix 15th March, 2005

Um. It's okay. Hella jerky though. You can barely touch a key and go flying off a cliff. The good level design makes up for that somewhat but it's still needlessly fiddly.

Posted by Steve Harris 15th March, 2005

Good work :) i've been looking forward to playing the full game.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

I don't know about that jerky thing, it doesn't really do that for me. I will test it on an older pc.

Posted by Kirby Smith 15th March, 2005

Link isn't working at the moment.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

yeah, dot tk hosting is down for a moment. Great great timing. I tested this on another pc, and it was a bit jumpy indeed, sometimes walking 8 pixels instead of 4, the next version will have better acceleration.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

http://www.newklear.com/fishhead/bnh.zip is the actual link.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

there is a difference between reporting bugs and just making things up, the sliding only works when the bottom detector is overlapping the platform.

Posted by Kirby Smith 15th March, 2005

*downloading* Gotta go to class but I'm looking forward to playing it.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

@phizzy: I will take another look at it.

Posted by hishnak 15th March, 2005

This is really good...I love the graphics. Nice and simple. One thing...the jumping is a little fast.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

phizzy, I checked it, and there is really no way this could happen, it really only has a slower deacceleration when on the ground. Thanks for telling anyway, my reaction was a bit harsh I think.

Posted by Hernan 15th March, 2005

Wow, great to see BnH finally finished. Excellent game!

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

I am working on version 1.01 right now, using circy's review on klik-me to make it better. expect it later today.

Posted by AndyUK 15th March, 2005

i tried to download it about 5 times and it always stops at 4%. I get left with a bad zip archive. why only me?

Posted by Zane 15th March, 2005

I can see certain people hating this (no names), as it dosent really do anything new. But I love it, perhaps as much as fishhead 3. Good job! I find the acceleration a bit quick though.

The Pros: Very good graphics Solid Engine Very nice Retro Feel The Cons: - Acceeleration leads to lots of falling off platforms. - Lots of background detail is nice, when its not overused so much in repeatative levels. - You very much abused weather effects to try and give veriation to levels. All In all, very fun retro game, if not, too retro.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

"You very much abused weather effects to try and give veriation to levels." what's wrong with that?

Posted by Jason Orme 15th March, 2005

nothing, but I wouldnt want to live where they do.. It would be a bitch to grow crops.

Posted by Jason Orme 15th March, 2005

plenty of bars on this farm to drink at though.. and a few 100 tracktors

Posted by Mitch M 15th March, 2005

dude.. It's a cartoonish platformer... What the hell is an italian plummer doing, resqueing a princes out of the hands of a mad monkey, throwing ballels at you :) there's no need for sence in these kinda games. I like this game. Job well done!

Posted by Jason Orme 15th March, 2005

I never said there was anything wrong with that.

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

lol yeah the weather is kinda shakey :)

Posted by 15th March, 2005

Your game look nice, I don't see anything that jerky. Also please post this at 3D Wave like you said you would. thanks

Posted by Hayo 15th March, 2005

I think there's a few too many "leap of faith" moments in the level design, but otherwise very well done. Solid engine, nice graphics, good music. Gets a solid 9/10 from me.

This game sucks!

Posted by Mårten 15th March, 2005

I've had some expectations with this game, and in terms of presentation it more than lives up to those. However, the engine is way to static and unresponsive to keep my attention. Platformers are all about control! It's also way too unoriginal and actually made me quit after only playing one level (the gfx made me go on). And what's up with all those levels? If you ain't got funny stuff to fill that many levels with there's no reason to have them. IMHO every level in a game like this should present at least one new game play element, be it a new enemy or a new type of moving platform etc. This should at least be true for the first part of a game, when all elements have been presented combinations may be put together. Taking the unoriginal-part further: You already got the idea of having two characters, how hard would it have been to actually give them different abilities, for example; Hank is bigger and uses shotgun = he's slower and does more damage. Even Andyuk would've been able to come up with that one :P and it sure would have spiced up this game a notch.

Posted by 卍 chicken14528 卍 15th March, 2005

hurray, finally someone without their head up their ass

Posted by danjo 15th March, 2005

well. i do think this is a "circy" type game indeed. (did you borrow his engine?) - anyway. on that subject, i see you are defending your coding somewhat, when you asked for bugs to be reported.. i dont doubt phizzy found one, and my game ended with me stuck in a level. ( http://www.acsv.net/members/danjo/stuck.jpg ) maybe you're not the expert you think you are? i liked the gfx, and the filesize the most. the game was ok-to yawn "always the same".. - but i guess you expected me to say that anyway ;)

Posted by Smeggy 15th March, 2005

Chicken, i've noticed that you seem to put down all good games that aren't created by either Natomic, Faind or HES. Take your head out of their asses, wipe the shit out of your eyes and realise that a game such as this is great, despite it's unoriginal approach.

Posted by Dustin Gunn 15th March, 2005

Great graphics, pretty challenging. Just got to the wild west and it looks very nice. Good job.

Posted by Smeggy 15th March, 2005

Danjo, please do point out where Hayo said he's an expert, and his games are indeed the best in the community. I believe he didn't say such a thing, and even admitted that Bernard & Hank isn't ground breaking, so what's with the attitude?

Posted by Hamish M 15th March, 2005

Some of you treat games you don't like like they were a personal insult directed towards you. It's just something some guys made for fun without making any claims of being great or the best, it even says so in the description.

Posted by Crystal Clear (H.E.S) 16th March, 2005

" Natomic, Faind or HES " well those guys over at HES are mighty fine :D Beautifiul graphics, nice simple gameplay. As Kirby said i also fealt there were to many "leap of faith" parts in the levels. I also got stuck on a platform, but you could easily jump out of it so not too much of a problem. There few flaws i felt such as acceleration and some of the level design, but Overall great entertaining game and superb artwork. Now time to try and beat it :D

Posted by Hayo 16th March, 2005

thanks for all the comments guys :) I will try to fix some flaws soon. "maybe you're not the expert you think you are?" Thats a classic, I am gonna keep that line.

Posted by Steve Harris 16th March, 2005

Call me mad but I don't think retro games are supposed to be groundbreaking. This game does what it set out to do.

Posted by Dustin Gunn 16th March, 2005

HES doesn't have any games. Infact it's pretty much disbanded

Posted by Hayo 16th March, 2005

I will take a look at that for the next version. should the acceleration be slower or the deacceleration faster? a note to some people, I really don't think I am a click god or something like that. sorry if I ever gave you that feeling. I am a good graphics man, but coding isn't my cup of tea. Also I don't do this to show off or anything, as it seems pretty useless to do that in front of a pc.

"Some of you treat games you don't like like they were a personal insult directed towards you. I wish certain people, yourself included, had the same attitude towards Mr Stumps Dentures.

Posted by Hayo 16th March, 2005

like Phizzy said "Clear your cache, and delete the partial file you have. THEN try again. " that must work. if it doesn't, dc-mail me.

Posted by pulsecode 16th March, 2005

Well, i think this game is pretty damn splendid! It has the right feel and atmosphere, allthough the engine could do with a tweak of acceleration and such as a few people have said. The main character doesn't really feel like he has much weight as it is, if that makes any sense. Generally great stuff! This is the sort of game that inspires me to get stuff done. Allways nice to see some high quality releases in the click scene, great job guys ;)

Posted by Radix 17th March, 2005

It's not that good. It's a decent platformer. But that's all that was promised and all I was expecting. Perdy pic-choors, too.

Posted by Dustin Gunn 17th March, 2005

The Daily Click is the last place I expect epic, original games, so why does everyone sound like it's so strange for Hayo to release an oldschool platformer with purty graphics and not so much innovation?

"Natomic, Faind or HES" - Wait a minute... we made a GAME? Why was I not informed? This one is... OK. I like the retro feel, but there's not really a lot new or interesting about it.

Posted by 卍 chicken14528 卍 20th March, 2005

well, despite boring the socks off people, its a decent game for what it was meant to be. so winning GOTW really doesnt surprise me id like to state that my opinion remains the same though... "being retro" is not an excuse for being incredibly boring

Posted by Hayo 20th March, 2005

I hate the word "retro" Its a fashion word, retro isn't retro at all. This game just had a lot of restrictions, and was never meant as a klik-classic or something. "I don't believe this peace of *** is gonna win GOTW award..." learn how to spell little boy :)
