Yet another Mascot platformer from AndyUK!

I wasn't going to release a demo but i've hit a bit of 'writers block' or whatever the equivalent is for Indie game developers...

So, the game!

It's 2d platformer inspired by the gameplay of the old arcade game The Newzealand story.

There are a variety of different weapons found in the levels (not all seen in the demo) that can be used to get to goodies as well as kill bad guys.

Coins can be spent in Shops found in some levels and there are loads of secrets in the levels.

Let me know what you think of the game.

If I jumped while underneath a low-hanging metal block in the area in the start of the second level where you fall through the floor and get a bomb and a 1-up, it wouldn't let me jump anymore. Also happened to me in the 1-up room hidden down an invisible staircase behind some floor tiles partway through the first level. Also, was it your intention to have the octorok-like enemies' projectiles be larger than the tile size? It looks odd when a projectile attack from a tile one below you kills you when you're standing slightly to the side on a platform one tile up.

I do like the style, and the rest of the engine seems tight. You used the different weapon mechanics to make some interesting optional puzzles.

Oh, and how long is the demo? I finished the second level, where it kicked me back into the map, then the first level again when I pressed shift. I didn't find a way back into the map, and it didn't seem to let me move on the map when I restarted the game.

If you jump through a jump-through platform and hold down with the shield, you can see the pirate appears behind the platform but the shield appears in front. :0

If you hold down while in the air with the shield, you can MMF's lag between repositioning the objects. :b

Also, pressing some number keys allows you to see detectors. :}

This game is nice Andy. I actually thought it was kind of hard. I like how you need certian wepons to get certian things, it makes the game fun. Actually that idea is a very generic one, but not a lot of click games have it. I liked it a lot, and i cant wait untill the full game is released.

It's a nice game, but Buzz is better

MMF doesn't have lag, that's just order of operations. The player moves after the shield does every frame. If he moves the event around it'll look right

yeah, i should really make the shield move inside the movement loops instead of the 'shield' group.

It's just too much like Tops and Buzz. Fun game, but more of the same. No offense, ANDYUKY.

Well it is more advanced in some ways from Buzz the squirrel and Tops the pig games.

perhaps not immediately noticeable though.

Btw there are no more levels after the 2nd grass level.

2nd grass level? You mean the 2nd part of the beach stage? I can't get any further than that.

Maybe i borked it up? That is rather like me...

I didn't even look at the demo after i made it lol

The levels are too empty for my taste. I think it would do much for the game if you just spent some time making lots of pretty backdrops and adding them a little here and there. Some flashy particle effects for collision and explosions wouldn't hurt neither.
I think you can make something great out of this, but as it is now, I find it kind of lame. I'd say: Implement more Effects, graphics and speed.

It's a little disheartening to hear peoples indifference towards it so far given how much work ive put into it.

Don't be disheartened! The engine is great and there's obviously been a lot of work put in. The only suggestion I have is to make the levels slightly less linear?

I think it's pretty good so far (would be great to see the full demo though, including the grass stage!)

Nice job so far. Keep up the work and you'll have something great.

This demo had very little to do with pirates. I hope you add some swash buckling, maybe a pirate ship level and some more yo ho ho and a bottle of rum type of stuff.

There's water... will that do?
