Lil' pirate is a console style platformer that takes a few ideas from The Newzealand story. It's been in the works for around 2 years although it's actually fairly short. (also i like to take long breaks, lol)
If anyone wants to see what the old game looked like then here is an old youtube video from around 2 years ago.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=llRdj5bzBu8

LP has won a cruise on a replica pirate ship! but shortly before it reaches the adventure island it is destroyed by a big fireball. He swims to shore and sets about finding a way home.

There are various collectibles in the form of weapons or powerups. You can also stop off at one of the many shops along the way.
Sometimes a certain weapon might be required to reach a certain area in a level and some areas might be completely hidden, trust me there are a lot of secrets to find, sometimes with extra lives or sometimes a few coins.

WEAPONS
-------

Arrow
Common but pretty good, can't kill things below you though.

Vertibomb
also common but hard to kill enemies with. Useful for smashing crates above or below you.

Big Bomb
Affected by gravity and stronger than the two previous weapons but is quite large so it's hard to squeeze through small gaps. It can collect coins for you.

Coin throw
A bit of a red herring, still usefull though. Much like an arrow but faster and depletes your coins!

Star
Very slow but useful as a platform to reach secret areas high in levels.

Hammer
Short ranged weapon, The only weapon that can destroy special floor tiles that look just like normal floor tiles.

Rainbow laser
The super ultimate secret weapon. You can buy these for 350 coins but some are hidden in some levels. Beware though because if you collect a different weapon the Rainbow laser will be lost for good!

POWERUPS
--------

Magnet
Attract coins, useful especially for out of reach coins and coins inside walls. Available in shops.

Shield
Holding down raises your sheild deflecting enemies and bullets alike. (makes most enemies that are dangerous to touch turn around) Also available in shops.

Dash
A bit of a double edged sword, good for reaching far away ledges but you can easily run into trouble. Lasts until you grab a canceler or you reach the end of the area.

Strength
Lets you destroy boxes by just walking into them. Be careful because not all boxes have goodies inside.

Heart
Lets you take a hit before dying (although falling off the bottom of the screen, getting squashed or drowning still kill you in one go)
Only available in shops for 50 coins

Controls (ctrl + y to change to joystick)
--------

Fire 1 or Shift = Select option or Jump
Fire 2 or ctrl = cancel or fire

It took such a long time because it started off as just using the same engine as my last big game Buzz the squirrel 2 and was still in The games factory. Since upgrading to Multimedia fusion 2 there was so much more I could do. Parallax scrolling, external files, more objects in a frame at once.
Not only that but I decided it was about time I made a decent engine and a level editor/loader. Thanks go to Phizzy for coding help with the engine and making the editor/loader.

So making this has been a learning experience, this is way more complicated than my other games although it's probably not all that noticeable by just playing. But then again my old games are really simple so... that doesn't mean much.

Anyway have fun!

Just completed it.. at last

Its fun platformer action, a little like Super Mario Bros 3.

I rate this game with 4 stars

+1: The Music was nice and really fit with the game

+2: The Graphics were pure awesome retroness

+3: A few secrets to help you advance in the game

+4: It really drives you to finishing it

-5: Once you complete it you just don't want to play it anymore, which i odd; but i guess the reason is that some points of the game can be a bit too challenging that you just don't wanna go through it again.

But good work none the less Andy.

Well done! I like the game. I cannot understand why some people complain that e.g. the hammer is just a rotating active. Self-made games are just for fun. If I want to play a game with good graphics and animations I buy recent PC games or play something on a PS3.

Click games are all about fun, ideas, creativity and also nostalgia as everybody knows that such games cannot compete with new games by EA, Codemasters, Atari or whoever.

Back to Lil Pirate...

The game is really cute (and no, it is not as cute as Rodland but this is my alltime fav and unbeatable. ). I also like the number of powerups. I have only played two levels so far but I already can say that the game is a must-keep on my HDD.

The best feature I saw so far is the magnet. I just love all those lovely coins coming to me, hehe.

Some glitches: beginners have difficulty in seeing what to do on the map. "Up and down arrows..." ... alright. But it is not that easy to see how levels change.

In addition, one monster walked towards me, walked over a powerups but was not in front of it but behind it.

Good, solid game with suitably challenging play. My only gripe is that a few of the bosses (helicopter and dragon in particular) have some cheesy weakness that allow them to be overcome without effort.

(Helicopter - vertical bombs can finish it off nigh instantaneously)

(Dragon - extreme left and right sides of the screen never seem to spawn falling blocks and are out of the path of the dragon's fire. Thus, no real reason to move/dodge).

I REALLY hate making bosses, so they're probably a bit easy too i guess.

I don't get the hype regarding this game. I got a feeling the staff members favor AndyUK for some reason calling this game a masterpiece (wtf?) and highly recommending it, omitting to do the same for Axiebal 7.

I don't know. This game feels and plays like a barely average Amiga platformer from the early nineties. Not that I mind the early nineties part. I mind it being barely average. Something in the line of Crazy Sue (not good).

The whole design seems forced and made by a person who wants to make a platform game, but is unable to conceptualize some coherent and well though-out setting(s). All the characters and environment seems bland and uninspired. After the silly first boss (who stands there completely frozen) I was left convinced the game won't game better later. Ok, maybe I'm wrong, I will play it more, but this is my original impression.

Painfully average in all aspects. Not that this is a bad thing itself. But when people start calling it excellent for reasons beyond me, I feel a need to react.

Posted by AndyUK 5th October, 2008

I have no idea why you think the game is average but maybe you should play a few more freeware platformers and stop comparing it to commercial quality games. I'm not a development studio i'm a hobbyist.

The first 9 being vastly superior to yours, while the last might be a matter of taste. I also got a handful more, but as they are not obviously superior to yours, I think you might use them as a counter argument. And you might have noticed I didn’t list Cave Story.

My point is, your game is average. If Lil’ Pirate is a masterpiece, then I don’t know what the games above are. Let’s get real.

Posted by AndyUK 5th October, 2008

Those are arguably commercial quality games. Like i said play some more freeware games. get some perspective.

Well, those are excellent freeware games. Just because there is a horde of people in the Click community releasing 10 minutes play time platformers (which to be honest, I don't see that many new lately), your game is instantly a winner/classic. Think twice.

And I don't see a point in you excluding other excellent freeware games from comparison by calling them commercial quality. You lost me there.

Anyway, I don't want be a bad guy here. I just strongly don't agree with highly recommended Daily Click tag this game got and the news text regarding Lil’ Pirate, and all this is a reaction on that.

I do compliment you on not compromising on difficulty. A rarity nowadays with Click games.

Maybe we can agree that we don't agree. I know how annoying it can be when you work hard and long on a project and realize not all like it. But I think you got enough positive feedback not to be bothered much (or at all) by my minority opinion.

This got the tag because it does rise above most of the games up here. Personally, it's one of the 4 click games I bothered playing after the first level. I surely enjoy it more than the knytt games.

Posted by AndyUK 7th October, 2008

I don't get why you are listing games that you consider better than my game Lachie.
That doesn't even make your point any clearer.

Does my game need to be the best game ever to not be average? I don't get it...

I'm sorry if Axiebal 7 wasn't rated as highly by the admins but maybe they think my game deserves it?

Posted by Lachie Dazdarian 7th October, 2008
Rated :

Well, maybe the Daily Click recommended feature is a new thing.

But I still think it's an average platformer. The volume of below average platformers doesn't make you game better. But maybe you are talking here about comparision, and me about universal quality.

Anyway, is the recommended tag only exclusive for Click games?

Because Lil' Pirate getting a highly recommended tag and Hatman recommended tag, while Axiebal 7 nothing...I don't know. I'm puzzled.

Posted by AndyUK 7th October, 2008

I doubt it, but you should really ask the Admins.

the graphics and music and presentation are absolutely great, but the gameplay itself is a little on the dreadful side. Its silly to compare things like this to games like those, thats like comparing lyle in a cube sector to metroid prime. Really andy's got a neat little klik game.

Indeed!
It may be hard as nails, and frustrating beyond human design. It really stands out from the crowd of Click games. It deserves all recognizion and more. I don't really get why you would want to down it in such a manner, that's just silly!

Posted by AndyUK 10th October, 2008

Well in all honesty I didn't realize everyone would find it so difficult.
I was going to take out a lot of the coins and 1ups because I thought they made it too easy.

Thanks DaVince.

Posted by Airflow 12th October, 2008

I thought it was ok until the end of the first level, a trail of coins leads into a pit of doom delivered with the word "lol". I mean ... why?

Posted by DaVince 12th October, 2008
Rated :

To piss you off. You can get the coins anyway by throwing bombs at it.

Posted by AndyUK 12th October, 2008

I didn't design it like that at all. There is a hidden area to the left where you are inside the LOL.

You can see the spikes anyway, why would you fall into a pit when you can see the spikes?

Posted by Airflow 14th October, 2008

A man sees a glass door with the word "opportunity" on it. He walks through and falls out of a tall building. Moral of the story?

Posted by AndyUK 14th October, 2008

pay attention to whats on screen?

Posted by Airflow 17th October, 2008

I think you mean
'Pay attention to what's through screen. Not what's on screen.'

Here, the man goes through the door, so basically it means 'Pay attention to what you're doing.' in the context you have bought up. I wouldn't have thought so deeply, and instead simply criticized there being a door in the first place. But that's just me, being the disgruntled oppertunist.

Posted by AndyUK 18th October, 2008

Well, maybe its poor level design on my part... I really didn't expect people to dive down there lol.

I can't really get into this, it just feels too basic. I can see the New Zealand Story bits (love that game) but overall it's lacking the charm that game had, and the graphics seem kind of washed out and bleak.

This is a quite a good platform game but i too don't think it should be HIGHLY recommended. maybe just 'recommended' because it doesn't offer anything particularly original, its just a solid generic platformer really. BUT ..it is a GOOD average one (if that makes sense). I.e. there is a whole game here, not just a few minutes of button mashing. good work.

Solid little game. Didn't have quite enough patience to play too much of it, especially since it gave my computer a bit of trouble. But it felt pretty polished.

Good job on this one!

it's good and I like the powerups system. But the levels feel a bit generic. Still above average quality though! Good job! =

You should try to expect the unexpectable. If you're putting coins over a pit, it means that people can think it's either a trap or a secret area... and then it's a trap.

Posted by AndyUK 6th February, 2009

You do realise you can see the spikes down there before you actually fall down there, right? that should have put people off. I guess it didn't work as intended.
